Not since the 1960s have showy zippers been as popular as focal points on garments or accessories. This isn’t one of my favorite trends. I like my zippers hidden and for function only, but to each his or her own. A well inserted invisible zip or a beautifully made rolled invisible hem has always been a sign of great craftsmanship and for fall/winter 2009 it’s vice versa. Zipper embellishment seems to be a favorite of big ticket couture designers and the look is very urban edge. Zippers are being used to embellish high fashion and evening wear like cocktail dresses.
This trend comes with a warning: When zippers are employed not only as a fastening closures on a bag, but also as part of the visible decorative surface, if rough they can also ruin your delicate clothing and fabrics. When you buy run your finger over the zip edge and choose a zip with quality finishing.
Here are a few new places zippers are showing up in full view:
1. Oversized and in the front on dresses, sweaters and coats.
2. Accessories: headbands, jewelry, cuffs and corsages.
3. Used as embellishment on the edge of gloves, belts and handbags.
4. Double visible zipper closures are showing up on high waist trousers and skirts.
5. Positioned at the ankle on pant legs and on skirt hems and slits.
