I have always been a big fan of oversized -- not dainty -- necklaces so this is one of my favorite trends for fall 2009. This statement necklace trend started in the early spring and has really taken off.
If you’re planning to add one to your wardrobe, the key thing to remember while shopping is to supersize. The bigger the better is the rule. From bling to beads, from ethnic to elegant, from metal to petals, anything goes. Throw one of these on and it's all you'll need in the accessory department. Add more and you will look overdone.
The catwalks, magazines and store windows are showing statement necklaces with some not so typical outfits. Here are some ideas:
1. Wear a big necklace with a plain white or graphic T-shirt.
2. Wear one over your basic or chunky turtle-neck, ditto for a button down, but make sure it’s over the shirt in full view and not under.
3. An oversized statement necklace is stunning on bare shoulders or with one of the latest one shoulder styles.
4. Wear a glam oversized statement necklace with everyday denim or distressed jeans. The contrast is a fun surprise.
5. Try adding an oversized necklace to your work suit or classic twinset for a cool retro look.
