Just when did it become okay to not match your handbag to your shoes? Sometime between Jackie O and Madonna is my guess. This spring it is all about the “BAG”. Here are a few key trends that were seen on the runways for spring 07.

Shapes: Satchels continue to be predominant. Oversized and slouchy were seen by many designers. Michael Kors brings us the new “barrel” shape satchel for spring with rouching on the sides. Tres chic!
From Coach and Dolce & Gabbana we see the messenger bag with clean line sophistication. The ever so popular clutch looks new for spring in metallic green and pewter.

Construction: Leather continues to be the leader in this category. Louis Vuitton brings us brocade and multi-colored patchwork in their signature logo for spring. Fendi offers textured patent and quilting.

Color: The latest color to hit the runways for spring 07 is electric cobalt blue. This is followed by brite lemon and fuchsia. Ombre prints popped up everywhere. White, last year’s hot color looks new when Fendi teams it with contrast stitch detailing. Don’t be afraid to mix these great brite colors. Gucci had a mixed media of color blocked brites on their bags for spring. DKNY combined brites with black for a pop of color!

Hardware: The key element that drives this category! Heavy metal is not just for rock concerts any more! You must remember the bling girls! Metallic hardware was everywhere! Christian LaCroix incorporated zippers and buckles on his bags while Luis Vuitton offered chain straps with leather handles. There were studs, S-shape closures and D-rings. Mixing your metals just became a fashion do!

Details: In addition to the hardware, other key details such as tassels and braiding were key. Piping was also strong when black or white was teamed with brites.

This year a focus on the Bag will put you ahead of the casual shopper- stay in the lead with accessories to stay in front of the fashion trend toward bolder complements to your clothes.
