Revisit the heyday of supermodels, fluorescents, and Billy Idol with designer-of-the-moment
Alice & Olivia. What began as a line of pants in 2002 has quickly become
one of the fastest growing must-have labels, coveted by the likes of Eva Longoria,
Sarah Jessica Parker, and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Alice &
Olivia’s most recent collection explores the impact of perhaps the
most glamorously wrong fashion era to date; a time when Linda Evangelista and
Claudia Schiffer ruled the runways, and wearing something sparkly was considered
conservative—a.k.a. The 80s. The Elizabeth Skirt is a flirty alternative
to a skin-tight mini, all the while showing those gorgeous gams. Silk gives
the piece a modern twist, but tonal stitching and smocked banding at the waist
keeps it true to the decade in high-fashion form.
While some trends can be recalled and welcomed back with open arms, there are
those that should simply be banned for life. Take, for instance, the bodysuit.
Gone for good, right? Wrong! Never would anyone have predicted the homecoming
of such a seemingly heinous piece, too often associated with jazzercise and,
ahem, dare I say…camel toe. However, Alice & Olivia has resurrected
the relic in a most unexpectedly fresh way. The Scoop Neck Tank Bodysuit boasts
wide black and white stripes, and the material is utterly irresistible. Modern
updates include a thong back (no panty lines, so don’t worry), and nylon-spandex
combo that makes for a thick, sustainable tank that looks effortless and chic.
So there.
Sequins
were never meant to be doled out in moderation, and the Sequin Short Sleeve
Mini Dress is no exception. This little number proudly features two-tone, on-the-bias
stripes, and the glam-rock factor is Boy George-high. For a softer take on the
mini-dress trend, the Bugle Bead Dress is the same sexy shift style with a more
refined elegance, thanks, in part, to the neutral color. It’ll spotlight
your legs, and if you’ve been a regular in spin class, they can shine
on their own anyway, without the assistance of sequins.
For those of you who are not ready to get bare-naked leggy just yet, the Wide
Waistband Pant is simply the perfect pair of white pants. Front slant pockets
and welt pockets on the back make this simple style a wardrobe staple, and white
pants are always a throw-back to the 80s. Since a body-conscious dress in bright
blue would have surely gotten you to the front of the line at the Paula Abdul
concert, you can see why it’s so easy to fall in love with Alice and Olivia’s
Knit Tube Dress. It will have you looking so fierce that you’ll have to
immediately Shut Up and Dance. Just make sure you ditch the big hair and enormous
plastic jewelry, Straight Up.
