Ruching is a sewing technique that gathers fabric in a repeating way to form a ruffle or gentlly pleated effect. It is everywhere these days and coming on strong for spring.
At first glance you might think this is strictly an effect for dressy fabrics (and it did do the circuit during the holidays for sure) , but it looks lovely and very current on unexpected textiles like leather, denim and wool as well. The ruching detail has been popping up here and there for almost a year now, but it seems to have taken off this season. I've even seen it in tennis dresses.
Not only are garments like skirts, jackets and dresses being detailed with ruching but also garments and accessories are being constructed entirely by rouched fabric. Rouching is showing up on trench coats by Burberry, handbags by Coach and Cole Haan and shoes and boots by Vince.
Ruching, if delicately done can hide problem areas and have a slimming effect. It can also accent a shoulder, beautiful back or sleeve and be very pretty.
