Plaid is still a major fashion trend for winter 2009. In the first part of the season we saw lots of plaid casual shirts, scarves and even socks, but plaid is getting its second wind in the fashion world, not just for the holidays and outerwear but for going to work during the day and out in the evening.
Plaid on men is one of my favorites but it can be tricky, it can come off too casual, too holiday or just too much. The early part of the season plaid ruled when it came to comfortable clothing especially shirts. But for the tail end of this season plaid has gone serious
Fashionistos are trading in their white and light blue button downs for plaid dress shirts. I really like this look, it's masculine, very Ralph Lauren and ties in nicely with the “gentleman look” that is also a hot trend.
Here are a few hints to get your professional plaid on.
1. Wear woven cotton not flannel.
2. When choosing a tie, stick with a dark color, preferably one in the shirt pattern
3. It’s okay to go with a pattern tie, just make sure it’s not super busy. The tie should calm and compliment the plaid
4. Remember the shirt and tie are the focus, stick with a dark basic suit in black, navy or gray, no pinstripes or plaids.
