Right now any of today’s hot designers and brands are using the retro look from the 1940’s for inspiration. Many of the trends and styles that were popular during the 1940 are reappearing as major hot trends for this season.
Because the economy is tight it’s a very very similar scenario to a world back six decades impacted by the war. Fashion today reflects the same. Our tight budgets are reminiscent of the shortage and rationing of fabrics back in the early 1940’s. Women were encouraged by fashion designers to mix and match as many outfits as possible and do avoid excess.
Here is a list of some of the trends from the 1940’s that are hot for fall/winter 2009.
1. Accessories to change the look of basic outfits: hats, gloves, and handbags especially fur, sequins and feathers. Ankle socks are showing up this season, in the 1940’s they also became popular to wear with heels.
2. Menswear influence - vests, high waist pants, full trousers, slimmer and shorter skirts.
3. Studs on leather accessories like shoes, handbags, belts.
4. Military influence: double row buttons, fuller and longer coats.
5. Fitted jackets, peplums and exaggerated shoulders.
Whether you’re into retro or not you will definitely want to check out the 1940’s influence you to stay au courant fall/winter 2009.
Saluting the 40s,
