“What do I wear to a holiday party when it’s cold outside?” This is the dilemma we fashionistas face during the holiday season right after what will I wear to the party? Normally we pack away short-sleeved and sleeveless garments when the temperature goes down, but we get thrown a curve ball in the fashion game because some of the most gorgeous evening and party clothes are short sleeved or sleeveless.
Nothing kills a fabulous outfit buzz more than covering it up with a big sleepy ole winter coat. People dashing from car to party can possibly get away with it but city walkers? No way. We fashionistas are reasonable gals we know it only makes sense to dress appropriately if its freezing outside but since it’s the holidays we want to make a special effort to let our festive party clothes influence our outerwear.
One key to holiday dressing and being warm is to layer up while maintaining a festive feel with the addition of warmth with dressier fabrics. Apart from getting a new dress coat in faux fur, cashmere or velvet, you can liven up your old stand-by adding a touch of luxe. A bit of shine like a brocade bag , velvet scarf or something with a metallic finish, silk , sequins or beading instantly creates a dressy feel.
If you have to wear wool you can add an accent like a sequined or faux fur scarf or pin. You can also wear fabulous gloves or an armful of bling. Make sure your jewelry shows, like an over-sized necklace and earrings. You could also opt for a faux fur coat or chubby jacket. Don’t forget your legs, if you’re not wearing pants and opt for a dress or skirt, I don’t suggest going bare legged unless you believe in suffering for fashion or your dress is long. Try wearing this season’s black or dark tights and fabulous heels or pair a lace stocking over an opaque color for an interesting and warm look.
Whatever layers you add make sure they work with the outfit as a whole (with coat off) to create an intentional fashion do rather than an unintentional don’t.
Stay warm!
